Murals in Wrocław

Murals in Wrocław

Attention – this note can be a little boring for native city dwellers ;)

Have you ever noticed (or counted) how many big paintings on building walls is in Wrocław ? I’m not from Wrocław and I remember that when I first came here I was under the impression of local murals.

Murals are in common sense recognized as a “big graffiti”. They are big-scale art works made on huge surfaces, usually on outdoor walls of buildings. Murals came from Mexico – this city is believed as a cradle of contemporary murals. Paintings was made also in other Latin America countries in 20’s and 30’s. Their aim was to picture national culture, history and social changes. There are known political murals e.g. in Belfast, where was concentrated riots caused by conflict in Northern Ireland. Present-day leader of murals is French city Lyon, where creates art-group Cité de la Création. Their murals beautifies town and aesthetically fills city space, cheats observer with help of perspective tricks or daubed architectonic elements.

In Wrocław we can find a lot of murals trough all the city, many of them is located in downtown. Murals in Wrocław was made by many respected street artist from all over the world (they usually use pseudonyms ) - DEM (Italy), BLU (Italy), Escif (Spain), Erica il Cane (Italy), FRM-kid (Poland), Jiem (France/Canada), M-City (Poland), Mudwig (Great Britain), Otecki (Poland), Remed (France, Sickboy (Great Britain) ,Vova Vorotniov (Ukraine), ZBK (Poland), Zosen (Spain).

Paintings comes into being from different initiatives, for example some of them were made as collaboration artists with BWA Wrocław. However, some of them is illegal.

  1. I really like the first painting, I saw it like yesterday... very detailed work, just amazing. My favourite painting in Wrocław is the black&white one on Wyspa Słodowa, I believe it was made by BLU...
